Professor Dionyssis G. Dimitrakopoulos (ORCID :0000-0002-6101-4022) was appointed in February 2024. He specialises in the theory of institutions and the EU’s political system. Prior to returning to Greece in 2024 he taught for more than two decades at Birkbeck College, University of London, initially as Lecturer and subsequently as Senior Lecturer and Reader in European Politics. He holds the Jean Monnet Chair in parliamentary democracy and European integration. He has also worked at the University of Oxford as a Marie Curie Post-Doctoral Fellow (Dept. of Politics & International Relations and Νuffield College), at the University of Hull as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (Dept. of Politics), and has held a visiting fellowship at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome, a visiting professorship at the Université d’Aix-Marseille, and a National Bank of Greece Senior Fellowship at LSE’s Hellenic Obsrvatory. Since October 2023 he is a contracted teaching fellow at the Hellenic Open University.Professor Dimitrakopoulos holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Hull. His doctoral dissertation was entitled Beyond transposition: a comparative inquiry into the implementation of European public policy and was supervised initially by Prof. Juliet Lodge and subsequently by Prof. Edward C. Page FBA. He also holds postgraduate degrees from Université Libre de Bruxelles (Institut d’Études Européennes, Licence Spéciale en Études Politiques Européennes) and the Institute of Education of the University of London (Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education). He earned his first degree at Panteion University. He is fluent in English and French and has a working knowledge of German.

His research relates to institutionalism, the politics of European integration and European public policy. It has appeared in leading journals in the field of European integration, such as the Journal of European Public Policy  and the Journal of Common Market Studies, discipline journals such as Political Studies, the European Journal of Political Research, the Journal of Theoretical Politics and sub-discipline journals such as European Journal of International Relations, the Journal of Public Policy, the European Law Journal etc. He has published two monographs, several articles that appeared in refereed academic journals, several book chapters. He has also edited academic volumes and special issues of refereed academic journals. His researched has been published in English, Greek and French.

Professor Dimitrakopoulos has acted as a referee for several academic journals such as the Journal of European Public Policy, European Journal of Political Research, Political Studies, West European Politics, Comparative European Politics, Journal of Common Market Studies and leading academic publishers such as Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, etc.

His research has been funded by the British Academy, the UK’s Economic & Social Research Council, the EU, the Leverhulme Trust and UACES. He has also been a member of the ESRC’s Peer Review College (two terms).
