Charalampos Platias was born in Athens. He holds a PhD in Political Science (European Integration, Policy and Governance) from the University of Bonn (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Germany) and a University Degree in Political Science & International Studies from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (Athens, Greece). He specialises in the fields of European integration and European policy and governance with emphasis on environmental policy and sustainable development. Since September 2019 he has been Assistant Professor at Panteion University’s Department of International, European and Area Studies. He previously held the position of Director for Port Policy (2018-2019) and Head of the Port Policy Unit (2013-2018) at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy of the Hellenic Republic, General Secretariat of Ports & Port Policy, where he had been working as member of the scientific staff, with expertise in European & international port policy issues since 2003. Since 2001, he has been teaching a number of different courses in graduate and postgraduate programmes at Panteion University and has participated in lectures of the “European Port Policy” postgraduate module for Piraeus University’s Department of Shipping. He is the author of three books, the first on EU regional policy, the second on EU environmental policy (co-authored with Prof. Gr. I. Tsaltas) and the most recent one on policy and governance issues of EU environmental policy and sustainable development (2020, revised and completed and 2016), and he has co-edited a book on the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). He has also published several academic papers and book contributions on many different topics, inter alia EU and international environmental policy and sustainable development, but also EU transport policy and ports, maritime spatial planning and participated in numerous relevant conferences and research projects. From 2002 onwards, he has been Associate Member of the European Centre for Environmental Research and Training at Panteion University and, in this capacity, he planned and conducted research projects, conferences and events, as well as interdisciplinary summer courses on sustainable development and the environment. He was a member of the Peer Review Group of the EU co-financed TEN-T/Horizon 2020 Actions “Monitoring and Operation Services for Motorways of the Sea” (2011/2012), “Business to Motorways of the Sea” (2014/2015), “Multidimensional, integrated, risk assessment framework and dynamic, collaborative risk management tools for critical information infrastructures” (H2020, 2016/2018) and the “PIXEL – Port IoT for Environmental Leverage” (H2020). He is also member of the Hellenic Association for International Law & International Relations.
