Curriculum Vitae

A. Dr. Christos Gortsos is Professor of International Economic Law at the Panteion University of Athens (Department of International, European and Area Studies). In addition, he has standing teaching assignments at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Faculty of Law of the Izmir University of Economics of Turkey, the European Institute of the Zurich University, the European Institute of the Saarland University, the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus, and the Athens University of Economics and Business (MBA Program).

He is also a Research Partner of the University Research Priority Program (URPP): Financial Market Regulation of the Zurich University.

B. Professor Gortsos studied, at undergraduate and graduate level, law, economics and finance in the University of Athens, the Zurich University, the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) of the University of Geneva, where he was awarded his PhD on International Banking Regulation (in 1996). During 1988-1989 and 1996-1999 he worked as Research Assistant at the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies (ICMBS) at the HEI.

C. His main fields of teaching are financial regulation, international and EU monetary and financial Law, Greek administrative financial law, general EU law, international trade law, as well as economic analysis of law. His most recent books and monographs include:

D. Professor Gortsos is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic branch of the International Law Association (ILA). He is also a member of the Monetary Committee of the International Law Association (MOCOMILA, since 2005), the European Center of Economic and Financial Law (ECEFIL, since 2010), the European Group of Public Law (EGPL) of the European Public Law Organisation (EPLO, since 2012), and the Academic Board of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP, since 2013).

During the period 2006-2009 he was a Member of the “Panel of Experts in Financial Services” of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament, and in 2014 a Member of the Task Force of the Center of European Policy Studies (CEPS) on “ECB Banking Supervision and Beyond”.

E. Apart from his academic career, Professor Gortsos is a member of the Athens Bar Association, admitted at the Supreme Court. Since July 2000, he is the Secretary General of the Hellenic Bank Association and in this capacity:

  • Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Deposit and Investment Guarantee Fund, and
  • Member of the Board and the Executive Committee of the European Banking Federation.
