CV

Gabriel Haritos is a Visiting Professor at Panteion University in the Department of International, European and Area Studies where he teaches History of Political Relations Israel-Greece-Cyprus. He teaches the same subject at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel Studies Program) and at the University of Cyprus (Department of History and Archaeology).

He has been residing in Israel since 2018 and he is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute (Azrieli Center for Israel Studies). His research interests are: History of Israeli foreign policy (with emphasis on the relations between Israel-Greece-Cyprus), Israeli political system, International Relations in the Middle East and Israel policy in the MENA region. His postdoctoral research focuses on the History of the political relations between Israel and the Republic of Cyprus during the latter’s first three yearw of independence (1960-63) and on the formulation of Israel’s current foreign policy towards the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.

He was born in 1972 in Rhodes. In 1996 he graduated from the School of Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and practiced law. He continued his studies in parallel with his work and in 2007 received his MA in International Relations in the Mediterranean (Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean). The subject of his MA Thesis was “The Democratization of the Arab States as a Priority of American Foreign Policy – The Case of Jordan and Tunisia”. In 2016 he received his PhD in International Relations (Department of International and European Studies, University of Macedonia) and the subject of his doctoral Thesis was “Israeli Foreign Policy and Cyprus, 1946-1960”.

His doctoral research was based on the official correspondence of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs between the years 1948 and 1960, through which he examined Israel’s foreign policy regarding the Cyprus conflict. Upon his request, Israel State Archives declassified the material mentioned above. He examined and collected primary sources at the Israeli Security Forces Archives. Having received a scholarship by the Public Information Office (PIO) of the Republic of Cyprus, he concluded his research at the Historical Cypriot Press Archives as well as at the “National Archives and Research Service”, based in Kyrenia and subject to the Turkish occupation authorities.

In 2013 he completed his internship at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, Tel Aviv University. Since 2018, he has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs, University of Nicosia.

During the academic year 2020-2021, he taught History of the Political Relations between Israel, Greece and Cyprus at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel Studies Program), at the University of Cyprus (Post Graduate Program, Department of History and Archeology) and at the University of Macedonia (Department of Balkan, Slavic and Anatolian Studies, Undergraduate level). This course was offered by the Greek, Israeli and Cypriot academic community for the first time.

For consequent four academic years (2014-2018) he was a Hebrew language instructor at the Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean.

He has published articles in Greek and foreign scientific journals and maintains a frequent presence in the Greek, Cypriot and Israeli media. His research interests are History of the Israeli Foreign policy (emphasis on Israeli-Greek-Cypriot political relations), the Israeli political system, Middle East International Relations and Israel’s policy towards the MENA region and the East Mediterranean.
